By plane: the modern airport "Cristoforo Colombo" is 6 km from the city center. The international airport of Genoa Sestri, "Cristoforo Colombo," was built in the area resulting from a marine landfill. It includes over 130 hectares (some 52 acres) with a landing strip of 2.5 kilometers. Genoa is served by an international airport with regular daily flights via domestic and international airlines.
By train: Genoa is one of the most important railway junctions of Italy. The Ventimiglia-La Spezia line gathers travellers in western Italy, going to Turin via Savona-Genoa, Milan via Genoa, Parma via La Spezia and joins the Tirrenica line for Rome, Naples and the South. Liguria is served by the principle international lines, coming from Nice, Moncenisio (near Turin), Gottardo, Germany, Austria and Slovenia. Rapid connections are guaranteed by the TEE, EC and IC trains, and by connections with convenient times in all directions. For those coming from the airports of Nice or Milan (nearest most important airports) it is possible to reach Genoa by fast trains in approx. three hours travelling time.
By car: Genoa is a node of the main motorway network: A10(E80)Ventimiglia-Genoa, A12(E80)Livorno-Genoa, A7(E25)Milano-Genoa, A26 Alessandria-Genoa.
By boat: the port of Genoa is important both for passenger and cargo shipping and the greatest ships in the world dock there. The port of Genoa is the most important Mediterranean and transatlantic maritime headquarters for passengers and merchandise. Ships arrive from ports in Europe, the Far East, the Americas, Africa and other continents. Frequent connections are guaranteed on national and Mediterranean routes, also for car ferries (Sardinia, Sicily, Corsica). Regular lines travel to the ports of La Spezia, Savona and Imperia. Smaller tourist ports allow docking of pleasure craft of every size, with optimum installations and services. In recent years shipboard vacations are again becoming appreciated. The introduction of new and up-to-date ships has been an active stimulus to cruise boats leaving from the port of Genoa.
Time schedule: 2-4 September 2009. In that period of the year the weather is normally warm and it usually does not rain. This is the period in which the city and its surroundings offer their best. In September, the minimum temperature in Genoa is between 10 and 15 centigrade, and the maximum between 20 and 25 centigrade.

Palazzo Ducale
Banquet - September 3
The construction of the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa began during the flourishing period of the Republican history of the city.
Genoa was gradually consolidating its economical power in the Mediterranean sea, with the defeat of the
Republic of Pisa in the naval battle at Meloria (1284) and the defeat of the Republic of Venice, in the naval battle near the island of Curzola (1298).
The first nucleus of the Palace, which would be named "Ducale" when it became the seat of the first Genoese Doge, Simon Boccanegra, was built in 1339.
The foundations of the awe-inspiring tower named "Torre del Popolo" ("Tower of the People"), also belong to this early period: it was completed in 1539 and
still "towers" over the old part of the city.
During the 14th century the Palace was enlarged, other buildings were added to the original one to fulfil the need for an inner square.
The imposing double staircase, which goes up to the lodges on the first floor, was also ascribed to Vannone. The Western flight -
often used by the Doge's processions - leads directly to the public rooms of the Palace, i.e. the "Salone del Maggior Consiglio"
(Great Council Hall - in photo) and the "Sala del Minor Consiglio" (Minor Council Hall) and to the dogal Suite.
Accessibility
- On foot (15 min): from Piazza della Vittoria (Starhotels President) follow Via XX Settembre until
Piazza De Ferrari.
- By bus (8 min): from Corso Buenos Aires take bus n.20 for 5 stops.
The Banquet will be in the "Sala del Maggior Consiglio" (Great Council Hall)

Villa Cambiaso
Welcome reception - September 2
Since more than 80 years, the charming Villa Giustiniani-Cambiaso, by Galeazzo Alessi, hosts the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Genoa. The various activities of the Faculty have always
been well integrated in this monument, respecting its original setting.
The Giustiniani - Cambiaso Villa is located in the Albaro borough in the eastern part of Genoa, on the Albaro hill, a place which is known for having been chosen by Genoese patrician families for their
stays "out of the town walls" since the end of the XIV century.
This Villa, which is often referred to simply by the Cambiaso name from the family to which it was
transferred in 1787, became, starting from 1921, part of the estate of Genoa Municipality, and hosted
the Royal School of Naval Engineering.
Since then Villa Giustiniani - Cambiaso has hosted the Engineering studies of Genoa University.
A free shuttle bus service will be available to transfer conference participants from Starhotels President to Villa Cambiaso and return for the welcome reception.
